Thornton le Dale History Society

Welcome to the History Society

The Society was formed in May 2013 for people interested in the history of Thornton le Dale and the surrounding area. You are very welcome to join the Society or to attend our meetings as a visitor (£2.50 fee).  There is a wide range of interests and expertise within the group and enthusiasm for investigating various aspects of the history of Thornton le Dale.

We usually meet in The Hill Memorial Institute on the last Wednesday of each month at 7.30 p.m. but please check individual dates and meeting times.  Do come along to a meeting and join us.

The next meeting of the Society will be on Wednesday, 29 January at 7.30 p.m.  when Nigel Copsey's talk will be 'Thornton and the Hill Family'. Nigel is an expert on the extensive Archive that exists of Hill Estate  and the talk will, most certainly, be very interesting.

Please note that there is no meeting in December.

Dates for 2020 are:

  • 29 January - Nigel Copsey 'Thornton and the Hills'
  • 26 February - Pat Donnor, 'Primitive Methodism in Thornton le Dale'
  • 25 March - Roger Burnett, 'Scarborough Parks and Pleasure Grounds'
  • 29 April - North Yorkshire Archives, 'Thornton le Dale in the Archives'
  • 27 May - AGM

In June 2018 the Society was awarded £300 by the North York Moors Association towards the purchase of maps and the cost of our exhibition held in May 2019.  We would like to thank the NYMA for their support.

 A Village Through Time

A group of members is working on a project 'Thornton le Dale: a Village through Time'.  We are collecting information about buildings in the village and tracing the people who lived there over the years.  Please keep an eye on the site for documents to download.  The documents below are transcriptions showing  people who rented property in the village from the Hill estate in 1740/41 and a document showing Hill estate tenants between 1800 and 1811.  There are also transcriptions of two different illuminated addresses to the Rev John and Mrs Hill in 1861 and 1892, listing tenants of the Hill estate.
