Poppies on the Green

In 2017 Thornton Le Dale Women's Institute and Friends created a display of over 1000 poppies, on The Village Green, to mark Remembrance Week.

We are delighted to say that the 2018 display is much larger, in recognition of the Centenary of Armistice Day.

The display includes 40 wreaths, one for each of the men from Thornton le Dale who lost their lives in the two world wars. The White poppies signify peace without conflict and the Purple poppies are in tribute to the millions of animals which served and died in both World Wars.

Background

In late August 2017, two friends from Thornton le Dale WI, agreed that they would like to do something to mark Remembrance Sunday in November, and decided to decorate a bench in the village with poppies. However, on presenting the idea to the September WI branch meeting they received an enthusiastic response, and realised that more could be achieved. Since September, WI members were busily knitting, crocheting and sewing. On Friday 10 November over 1000 poppies were displayed on Thornton le Dale Village Green. Friends, family and neighbours were recruited to help, and poppies sent from as far away as Florida, USA were included in the display.

Thornton Le Dale WI would like to thank everyone who contributed to the overall display. There have been many very positive comments and reactions from members of the public.
