Thornton le Dale History Society

Welcome to the History Society

The Society was formed in May 2013 for people interested in the history of Thornton le Dale and the surrounding area. You are very welcome to join the Society or to attend our meetings as a visitor. There is a wide range of interests and expertise within the group and enthusiasm for investigating various aspects of the history of Thornton le Dale.

We usually meet in The Hill Memorial Institute on the last Wednsday of each month at either 7 or 7.30 p.m. but please check individual dates, for meeting times.

On the afternoon of Monday, 12 June there will be a visit to the English Heritage archaeological store in Helmsley.  Please contact Liz Whitehouse if you are interested in going on this trip.

There will be no meetings in July and August.  The September meeting will be held on Wednesday, 27 September, speaker to be announced.

Please come along to a meeting and join us.

The group recently bought some display panels with a grant from North Yorkshire County Council.  We would like to thank Cllr. Janet Sanderson for her support of our application.

 A Village Through Time

A group of members is working on a project 'Thornton le Dale: a Village through Time'.  We are collecting information about buildings in the village and tracing the people who lived there over the years.  Please keep an eye on the site for documents to download.  The documents below are a transcription showing some of the people who rented property in the village between 1800 and 1811 and two different addresses to the Rev John and Mrs Hill in 1861 and 1892, listing tenants of the Hill estate.
